Understanding the pathology of a common eye disorder of children
Clinical problem
Amblyopia is a relatively common (incidence 3%) disorder of the eye in children that results in a permanent visual impairment in the affected eye. As such, it is the largest cause of blindness in one eye in the adult population. Its underlying cause is not the eye itself, but the result of a disruption to early visual development in the visual connections in the brain. The study
This project is using the latest non-invasive, functional MRI technology to locate the site of disruption in a group of patients suffering from amblyopia, and determining what brain-derived information streams are affected.Ultimate aim
This study will gain knowledge that may lead to earlier detection and appropriate treatment for patients.
