The Wesley Research Institute Board, chaired by Mr Martin Albrecht AC, consists of 11 highly qualified, skilled and dedicated men and women who not only govern the Institute but are actively committed to fundraising for medical research.

Our board members are listed below.


Mr Martin Albrecht AC, Chairman (infrastructure)

Chairman of The Wesley Research Institute Board since 2004, Martin is actively engaged in the capital raising and physical expansion within The Wesley Hospital precinct.

Martin is also the Chairman of Thiess Pty Ltd and Geodynamics Limited and a non-executive Director of Leighton Holdings Ltd. He is a member of the Queensland Premier's Business Round Table, and Chairman of the International Riverfoundation.

Martin has extensive experience in the engineering, construction and related service industries. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Thiess for over 15 years and Chairman since October 2001. Under his leadership, Thiess expanded to become a pre-eminent Australian and international engineering and construction service provider.

He maintains an active interest in a wide range of government, community, education and cultural activities.

Martin was awarded a Companion in the Order of Australia (AC) in the General Division for service to the construction industry, to the development of export markets, to the engineering profession, and to the community in the areas of education and corporate social responsibility and industrial safety. Dr David Alcorn (medicine and health)

David Alcorn has been a Board Member since October 2004. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has previously served as a Blue Care board member.

David consults as a forensic and occupational psychiatrist and is the Chair Elect of the Queensland Committee of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

David also works part-time in medical administration at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and is undertaking a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Melbourne. [Back to the top]

Mr Peter Allen (law)

With more than 25 years experience as a lawyer, Peter Allen brings a wealth of knowledge to the Board having joined in April 2005.

He is currently Chairman of TEQSTART Pty Ltd.

Peter is also Chairman of the Revenue Law Committee of the Queensland Law Society and a previous President of the MS Society of Queensland. [Back to the top]

Mr Peter Brand (pharmacy and health)

Peter Brand has been on the Board of Directors of The Wesley Research Institute since its establishment in 1994, and served as Chairman from 2001 to 2002.

He is Director of Pharmacy Services for Wesley Pharmacy and Associated Pharmacies. He is currently Chairman of the Pharmacists’ Board of Queensland and President of the Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Associations. He has served as President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (Queensland Branch), Chairman of the Australian Council of Professions (Queensland Branch), Director and Deputy Chairman of QDL Ltd, Director of the Sigma Company Limited, and National President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. Ms Teena Jameson (media and advertising)

Teena Jameson has served on the Board since November 2002. With a career spanning over 30 years in marketing, advertising and media, she has brought a wealth of experience to the Institute.

Teena is currently a Director, Chief Executive Officer and principal shareholder in Mitchell & Partners (Qld) Pty Ltd, Queensland’s largest and most successful media advertising agency. She is also a Director of her family’s investment company Jaco Enterprises Pty Ltd and a former Director of the Brisbane Festival. [Back to the top]

Prof David Kavanagh (psychology and research)

David Kavanagh has been on the Institute Board since 2001 and is a Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland. He has an international reputation in behavioural health research, and was Director of Research for the Faculty of Health Sciences from 2001-4. [Back to the top]

Mrs Rosalie Martin AM (finance and the arts)

Rosalie Martin was appointed to the Board in 1998. Rosalie is currently the Chair of the Griffith Business School, Chair of the Board of the Camerata at St John's, Member of the Griffith Business Advisory Council, and the Director of two private investment companies.

With over 30 years experience, Rosalie has served on the Boards of The Wesley Hospital, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, The Queensland Orchestra, Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Queensland Biennial Festival of Music, the Brisbane Festival, and the Uniting Church Foundation.

In June 2005, Rosalie was appointed to the Member in the Order of Australia (AM) for her outstanding contribution and achievement in the fields of medical research, education and training, financial markets, and the arts. Rosalie was also awarded the Moderator's Medal for Outstanding Community Service. More recently, she was conferred as a Wesley Emeritus Fellow. [Back to the top]

Mr Collin Myers (media, corporate affairs and investor relations)

Collin Myers has been a Member of the Board since July 2004.

Collin has a strong background in media, public affairs and investor relations, having worked as The Courier-Mail's Chief State Political Reporter, in the Canberra Press Gallery and in Westminster for Reuters, as Senior Adviser to the Australian Prime Minister, and as General Manager of Corporate Affairs with MIM.

His extensive community service has included board positions with the Royal Queensland Bush Children's Health Scheme, the National Heart Foundation, the Queensland College of Art, the TN Theatre Company and the Brisbane Biennial Festival.

He now works as an investor relations consultant, and serves on the Griffith University Business School's Business Advisory Council, and the Executive Committees of the Queensland Private Enterprise Centre, and the Queensland Youth Orchestra. [Back to the top]

Ms Jillian Richards (finance and accounting)

Jillian Richards has served as a Member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee since November 2003. Jillian oversees the investment, accounting and financial reporting processes established by the Institute.

Together with her commitment to the Institute, Jillian is a Partner with KPMG and Director of Brisbane Powerhouse Pty Ltd. [Back to the top]

Mr Neil Summerson (accounting and commerce)

Neil Summerson is a Chartered Accountant with 35 years experience in professional accounting and business. He was the Managing Partner (Qld) of Ernst & Young for several years. He is a past State Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Currently he is a Director of several public, private and government Boards including Chairman of Brisbane Water Board, PQ Lifestyles Limited, Motorama Holdings Pty Ltd, Leyshon Corporation Limited, Australian Property Growth Fund limited, and a Director of Bank of Queensland Limited and Australian Made Campaign Limited.

Mr Max Walters (media industry and finance)

Max Walters, the Managing Director of Channel Seven Brisbane, was appointed to the Board of The Wesley Research Institute in February 2005. Max has provided a wealth of knowledge and support to the Institute, drawing on his experience in the finance, management and media industries. Through Max’s leadership, Channel Seven Brisbane has provided a valuable vehicle for public promotion of the Institute’s research activities.

Max has held senior positions with KPMG, Watkins Pacific Limited and Channel Seven Adelaide and has held appointments with The Abused Child Trust, Queensland Library Foundation, Flinders Medical Centre Foundation, Queensland Olympic Council, and Project Australia.

A former Sheffield Shield cricketer and Queensland Chairman of Selectors, Max was awarded an Australian Sports Medal in August 2000 for his services to cricket. [Back to the top]
