Director, Professor Julie Campbell AO

The Wesley Research Institute was established in 1994, in the grounds of The Wesley Hospital.

Since 1996, under the leadership of Director Professor Julie Campbell AO, the Institute has grown and expanded its research projects, services and facilities.

In its short history, the Institute has funded a total of 75 major research projects, involving hundreds of patients with the results benefiting thousands more. We also have the facilities to conduct up to 40 clinical trials at any one time in our dedicated new centre.

Professor Campbell’s experience and reputation as a scientist and her vision as Director have driven the growth of the Institute to become a world-class research facility inspired by the Mayo Clinic in the United States.

The Institute has reached two significant milestones in its short history. The first was reached in 2004 when Queensland Premier Peter Beattie opened its new, expanded premises, the Research Education Training and Administration Centre. The second major achievement was in March 2007 when Queensland Premier Peter Beattie opened its new Clinical Trials Centre and Tissue Bank.

This year, the Institute has reached a point of critical mass, celebrating further expansion with the opening of a Tissue Bank and a new Clinical Trials Centre. It has also secured approval and funding to build a Health and Medical Research Centre, which is expected to triple the research capacity of the Institute.
